Er ist auf instagram und Co nicht zu finden, ein Smartphone besitzt er nicht und seine Emails schreibt er auf einem Computer der digitalen Anfangszeit. Seine Art ist zurückhaltend, fast scheu. Seine Augen wach und freundlich – so wach wie sein Verstand, der surrealisitische Bild-Ideen produziert, die nach ausnahmslos handwerklicher Umsetzung schreien. Denn Computer-Fotomontagen lehnt er entschieden ab.

Der Künstler Marc Sommer hat surrealistische Ideen und findet Mitstreiter – einer seiner wichtigsten ist sein Vater Richard. Weiter im Kindesalter sein Sohn Froment, der oft Hauptdarsteller seiner frühen Arbeiten ist.

Es stricken betagte Frauen, die er bei Strickwettbewerben auf dem Land findet, eine Ummantelung für die Seele, Tierpräparatoren werden mit seinen Ideen an den Rand der Belastbarkeit getrieben und der neue Toaster wird zersägt. Mitsamt Tischplatte.

Images that seem to be an ironic and poetic challenge to an AI

With Marc Sommer, we present photographs that are implausible. And yet real:

He can’t be found on instagram and co, he doesn’t own a smartphone and he writes his emails on a computer from the digital early days. His manner is reserved, almost shy. His eyes are alert and friendly – as alert as his mind, which produces surrealistic image ideas that cry out to be realised by hand, without exception. Because he firmly rejects computer photomontages.

The artist Marc Sommer has surrealistic ideas and finds supporters – one of his most important is his father Richard. His son Froment, who is often the protagonist of his early works, was also a child.

He knits a sheath for the soul for elderly women he finds at knitting competitions in the countryside, taxidermists are pushed to the limit with his ideas and the new toaster is sawn up. Together with the table top.

Biografie

1970 : Geburt in Straßburg

1989-93: Studium in Nizza (Absolvent einer Hochschule)

1994-95: Studium der Germanistik in Heidelberg und Wien

1996-2003: zahlreiche Reisen und Aufenthalte in Osteuropa. Beginn der analogen Fotografie.

2007: Beginn der konzeptionellen fotografischen Arbeit mit einer ersten Digital-Kamera.

 

Mit geduldig ausgeklügelten mechanischen Tricks setzt er – einfach für sich und zum Spaß – seine Bildideen um.

Für ihn ist die Fotografie eine Familienangelegenheit. Mit seinem Vater Richard, einem erfahrenen Handwerker, kreiert er Maschinen und Inszenierungen . Elsässische Schimpfworte werden hierbei zahlreich verwendet. Sein Sohn Froment wird hierbei sein wichtigstes Model – eine für die 3 Männer bis heute magische Zeit.

Jahrelang, ohne es jemals zu zeigen, erarbeitet er ein vom Absurden geprägtes Werk, das zugleich leicht und tief ist.

Es ist die berühmte Fotografin Laurence Demaison, welche im Jahr 2015 seinen Weg in die Pariser Kunstszene mit einer ersten Ausstellung ermöglicht.

1970 : Birth in Strasbourg

1989-93: Studies in Nice (graduate of a university)

1994-95: German studies in Heidelberg and Vienna

1996-2003: numerous trips and stays in Eastern Europe. Beginning of analogue photography.

2007: Beginning of conceptual photographic work with a first digital camera.

 

Using patiently devised mechanical tricks, he realises his image ideas – simply for himself and just for fun.

For him, photography is a family affair. Together with his father Richard, an experienced craftsman, he creates machines and stagings. Alsatian swear words are used extensively. His son Froment became his most important model – a magical time for the three men to this day.

For years, without ever showing it, he created a work characterised by absurdity that is both light and profound.

It was the famous photographer Laurence Demaison who made his way onto the Parisian art scene with his first exhibition in 2015.
