MAKOS INFLUENCED
Christopher Makos 27.11.2026 – 06.03.2027

Photography: where art, pop culture and contemporary history meet

Makos’ work has been presented internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including at Tate Modern in London, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, IVAM in Valencia, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. His photographs are held in major institutional and private collections.

After graduating from high school and spending time exploring the architecture of Paris, Makos moved to New York. In 1976, he met the legendary photographer Man Ray, an encounter that would have a lasting influence on his work. That same year, he met Andy Warhol. Their encounter marked the beginning of a close friendship and a long-standing artistic collaboration. Makos became part of Warhol’s New York circle and contributed to his magazine Interview. In 1979, he also served as art director of the photography book Andy Warhol’s Exposures.

Through his camera, Makos captured an extraordinarily creative era in New York. His photographs portray artists, musicians, and cultural figures such as Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Debbie Harry, and Salvador Dalí. They combine documentary intimacy with a distinctive visual language. His work has appeared in numerous international magazines and has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world.

His engagement with Andy Warhol represents a significant focus of his photographic oeuvre. Makos photographed Warhol over many years and published Warhol: A Photographic Memoir in 1989, a photographic retrospective of their friendship and travels together. His portraits of Warhol are now also held in major museum collections. The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, for example, holds Makos’ Altered Image: Warhol in Drag in its collection.
